What is Alyeska Resort’s Slush Cup?
If your first thought on hearing the words ‘slush cup’ is one of those sickly-sweet artificially-coloured frozen drinks, you need to adjust your definition of slush!
At least, that is, if you are heading to Girdwood, Alaska on the second weekend in April, where Alyeska Resort’s Slush Cup will be in full swing. This epic event is a chaotic celebration of both the end of the ski season and what happens when sun and snow meet – SLUSH!
The focal point of the hotly-contested Slush Cup is ‘the pond’ – an icy body of water strategically placed at the bottom of the ski slope.
It’s this pond that skiers and snowboarders (dressed in crazy costumes we should add) attempt to launch themselves across at tremendous speeds. Some make it across in spectacular fashion – the majority don’t (which is often even more spectacular!).
Participate… or just watch (depending on your level of idiocy…)
Held every April – and now in its 42nd year – the Slush Cup is just one part of the weekend-long party that is Alyeska Resort’s Spring Carnival.
In addition to catching the cup, you can also watch the Idiot Swim, where ‘brave souls’ (aka special kind of idiots) attempt to swim the icy pond. Or the Tug-of-War where teams (aka teams of special kinds of idiots) attempt to tug the other team into the icy pond.
The best news? You can be one of these idiots! There are plenty of opportunities to participate in all the events listed. However, if you’d rather not freeze your ass off, simply wrap up warm, have a couple of beers and enjoy watching the guy dressed as Donald Trump backflip headfirst into the slushy pond.
Yeah. We know what you are thinking. Winter sport at its finest.
- Celebrate the end of the skiing season with a three-day carnival
- Watch idiots launch themselves across an icy pond…
- …or be one of those idiots yourself!
- Loads of entertainment, drinking and slush!
