Who wants to travel to Heaven on Earth at Auroville?

First things first. If you 're thinking "What's an Auroville?" we better take a New York minute get you up to speed!

Auroville is a utopian township based in Southern India. The brainchild of Mirra "Mother" Alfassa, her project saw 5,000 people from 124 nations assemble near a banyan tree on a barren plateau in Tamil Nadu for an inauguration ceremony in 1968. Their aim was to build a sanctuary, an ideal society, an ideal city... and By George - fifty years on - it looks like jolly well succeeded!

Today, Auroville houses 2,500 residents on a radiating spiral shape within lush forests and beaches. Its purpose is to realise human unity through diversity, the transformation of consciousness, sustainable living and the future cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind.

So if you've ever thought of ditching the rat race and joining a colony... you're going to want to check out the world's only real Utopia!

If you're hippy and you know it, Auroville is the place for you!

What's to do? Well, you can choose to visit for a few hours or stay a few days or weeks in one of the many guesthouse accommodations while enjoying delicious multicultural cuisine at the fine eateries that punctuate the site's energy-rich red earth. Under the warm glow of the enchanting Indian sunrises and sunsets that bounce off Matrimandir's golden dome at the heart of the city, you'll find a wide range of programmes; from meditation, prayer and spiritual seminars to exhibitions, performances, lectures, from artistic workshops to volunteering and study programmes.

Alternatively, you can use the city as a base to explore South India, undertake meaningful mindful journeys with Sri Aurobindo's famous yoga study, tours, and spiritually oriented activities. Auroville opens up deeper inner and outer dimensions. So take your time to absorb Auroville’s healing energy field, walk around, talk with residents, sit and relax, be here…

But be warned - once you've tuned in and dropped out, you may never want to leave!

In short:

  • Travel and explore beautiful South India
  • Unleash your inner hippie and find your new self in Heaven on Earth
  • Visit for the day, a week, a month, a year or never leave Auroville!
