What is the Bivacco Gervasutti?
The Bivacco Gervasutti is a bivouac shelter perched above the Italian Alps in the Mont Blanc massif near the French and Swiss borders. If you’ve ever seen the wonderful film The Italian Job, just imagine staying in a luxury version of the bus… and hanging over the edge of a 2,835m, Alpine precipice.
Named after Torino Mountaineer, Giusto “The Strong” Gervasutti, the bivouac was originally a wooden shelter for mountain climbers and used as starting point for approaching the east face of the Grandes Jorasses.
Since the new shelter (which resembles the fuselage of a small aircraft) was installed in 2011, it serves as a mini boutique hotel and the perfect base camp for you and 12 of your crew to warm your cockney cockles for the night!
The website is in Italian, but just let your web browser translate the page for you, like wot we did (That’s proper Michael Caine cockney right there) Trust us, it’s worth the effort!
Hang on a minute lads, I've got a great idea!
The Bivacco Gervasutti may be simple, but it’s the chicest boutique mountain shelter you’ll ever have stayed in. There’s an emergency radio to make sure you remain a member of The Self Preservation Society, a computer to track weather conditions and control the hi-tech electrical and air extraction systems.
There are kitchen facilities, an electric hob plate and saucepans for cooking your pasta al dente and a small dining table under a ship-like round window to watch the sunset before you polish off the last of the Chianti and slip into your bunk beds.
And when you’re woken by the warm light of the morning sun glinting off those magnificent mountains, those views are going to take your breath away even more than the altitude!
Please remember to keep the door closed else the mountain wind will blow the bloody doors off!
