Why Boardmasters Surf and Music Festival?
Boardmasters is a beachfront music festival meets pro surf comp on the legendary Fistral Beach in Cornwall, home of British surf and springboard for surfer-musician Ben Howard, who now travels the world strumming his guitar and surfing. Oh, the good life!
Apart from making us mere mortals look so ordinary, what do pro surfers and musicians have in common? Simply put, life for these fortunate few is based on a special Cool Rules formula: make something really difficult look effortless and always overuse “bro”, “man” and “dude”.
Yet, what is a star without fans? Or rather, what is a surf and music festival without humble festival goers, swooning and drooling over our idols under the summer sun, proclaiming “yeah man, I tried surfing once, was heavy as bro”, and “dude, I kill this song on Guitar Hero, like dude, kill it”. Righto, remember you’re at Boardmasters as humble mortal festival goer, for goodness sake don’t let the pros hear you speak like that.
Sun, Surf, Cider and Stoke.
What I really love about Boardmasters is that it’s far more than a beer-in-hand summer festival. It’s a five day journey inspired by the spirit of adventure and power of individual creativity, projected on 10+ stages overlooking 300 miles of pristine surfable coastline. Real world responsibilities fade away as the sun rises over the Cornish coastline and the meaning of life revolves around music and waves, just like Ben Howard then!
I think you’d agree we generally leave festivals nursing a sore head, attempting to piece the party together. Boardmasters however, speaking from experience, leaves you feeling downright inspired to do the things that make you stoked.
