Why celebrate Diwali in the Community?

Diwali is Hinduism’s biggest and brightest festival and this year, we’ve found a very special way to integrate with and lend a helping hand to Mumbai’s community on this Dharavi Tour & Diwali Celebration!

In case you’re haven’t been enlightened, Diwali is The Hindu Festival of Lights. Celebrated all over the world, but particularly in Asia and the subcontinent, it is a time for decorating your home with lights and shopping, fireworks, puja (prayers), gifts, feasts and delicious sweets so strike a match and light up your diya… that’s an oil lamp, in case you were wondering.

The tour of Dharavi involves an eye-opening look at the slum area from the perspective of everyday Mumbai folk and promises to illuminate your mind while the glittering Diwali Celebration promises to bring warmth and compassion to your heart.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond!

First up, you’ll take a few hours to learn about Dharavi on our signature tour, taking in the recycling centre to see how turning waste bottles into plastic pellets can help heal Mumbai, India and the world. Then it’s on to the factory rooftops. Okay, it might not be the Taj Mahal but the tin “hutments”, which house thousands, stretch as far as the eye can see, making for an unforgettable view!

Next, the tour heads to The Community Centre, which provides education in English, computing and soft skills to the young adults of Dharavi before arriving at a local family’s home to sample some traditional sweets, learning more about Diwali and making rangoli designs - beautiful patterns created on the floor in living rooms or courtyards utilising coloured rice and flower petals.

Finally, as the balmy Mumbai dusk takes hold, it’s onto a girls’ football field to light some oil lamps and sparklers. If that’s not enlightening enough, 80% of the profits go back into the community to improve the quality of local lives.

In short:

  • Help the community during The Hindu Festival of Lights
  • Tour Dharavi’s surprisingly beautiful rooftops at sunset!
  • Visit a local family home for delicious sweets and ringoli designing
  • Shine bright like a diamond with the Dharavi Tour & Diwali Celebration!
