Fancy this rewarding Iraq Zagros Mountains Expedition?
Be honest - when you imagine Iraq, magnificent snow-covered mountains, beautiful rolling valleys, ancient citadels and warmest welcomes do not immediately spring to mind, do they? This Iraq Zagros Mountains Expedition WILL change your perception of this beautiful country forever.
No - did you just say Iraq and Snow in the same sentence?
Yes, we did. In the north of Iraq lies the autonomous region of Kurdistan and with it, the rich and hospitable culture of the Kurds. The region's remote and wild Zagros Mountains guard the high passes into Persia, and the king of the range is Mount Halgurd. Standing a majestic 3,607m, it is the highest climbable peak in Iraq... and you are going to climb it!
Oh, no I'm not! - Oh, yes you are!
You'll arrive in Kurdistan’s amazing, tourist-free, ancient citadel of Erbil to explore its charming mosques and bazaars. From Erbil, you'll make your way to the mountains, enjoying typically warm Kurdish welcomes in the valley communities before, under expert guidance, you push yourself to the limits!
Don't panic. You won't need technical mountaineering experience per se, as you'll be taught to use crampons and ice axes. You will, however, need to be fit as a butcher's Afghan Hound as you'll be climbing for 6-8hrs a day, carrying full winter-kit, food and everything you need to camp, cook and eat on the rugged mountainside.
But you can handle that, can't you? Because it's worth it....
You'll make a summit attempt on Mount Halgurd and maybe other, surrounding peaks, too! Your reward for all this exertion is to sleep under the glow of a million stars and wake up to incredibly beautiful, Himalayan-like sunrises. And we know the Kurdish culture is going to have a profound effect on you, forever!
This richly rewarding trekking expedition to Iraqi Kurdistan packs culture, camping, camaraderie and crampons into one neat adventure bundle!
