The Jasper Dark Sky Festival - to Infinity, and Beyoooond!
In 2011, Alberta's Jasper National Park was designated as a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society in Canada. Due to its low light pollution, 11,000km² were opened up for stargazing and the Jasper Dark Sky Festival was born. Bend space-fabric to present day and the festival has gone supernova - Jasper now has its own planetarium, the biggest telescope in the Rockies and a Skytram!
And the speakers are right up there with the best!
As you'd expect from the world's best (or darkest?) Dark Sky Festival, there's a whole cluster of personalities like Martin and Scott Kelly - twin brother astronaut pioneers of the International Space Station. There's also a galaxy of star speakers on the SPACEtalk panel, such as "Physics Girl" Dianna Cowern, FOX’s Xploration Outer Space presenter, Emily Calandrelli, Nat Geo's Nadia Drake and Seth Shostak, from the SETI Institute. Oh, and we nearly forgot NFL player-turned-astronaut Leland Melvin (spare a thought for his poor, poor, high school careers advisor!)
What else is there to look forward (or should that be up) to at Jasper Dark Sky Festival?
There are incredible Dark Sky Photography Workshops and the chance to tour planets, moons, stars and galaxies in the planetarium. But it's not all science talk - there's a whole Astronomical Unit of fun to be had, too! From a glittering VIP Stargazing Reception and a supermassive Big Bang Expo to art exhibitions and a Symphony Under The Stars. If you like your music a little rockier, there are indie rock gigs from astrophysicist and astro-musician Matt Russo and his band - Toronto's own RVNNERS.
You'll get the chance to blast off with astronomy experts for an exclusive dining and stargazing experience on the Jasper Skytram, which will take you 1km closer to the stars for a guided tour of the Solar System. Last but not least, for all you romantics, you can fall in love under the Northern Lights as you go aroura-gazing at Maligne Canyon.
