Le Grotte della Civita – it's a sassy Sassi!
International hotels chains certainly serve their purpose, but a night in a cut-and-paste hotel room can leave you craving accommodation with... well, a bit more character.
If it’s character you’re after – not to mention a little serenity, history and luxury thrown in for good measure – you don’t have to look hard to find it at Le Grotte della Civita!
Located in the oldest area of the traditional Sassi of Matera in southern Italy, Le Grotte della Civita offers the chance to stay the night in an 18-room hotel built into an ancient network of caves. Honestly, it's like staying on a film set (although many luxurious leagues ahead of Barney's Bedrock Boutique in The Flintstones).
But hey (you say), what makes Le Grotte della Civita so unique?
Over the centuries, the Sassi of Matera has been home to inhabitants of the stone, bronze and middle ages – and now this distinctive hotel makes this unique area yours for the night!
While the jaw-dropping architecture and historic charm have been retained (thanks UNESCO…), the hotel is more than just caves. (which is great, otherwise we’d have a hard time recommending it...). The setting, where the past has been preserved, from the original wooden floors to the traces of history left in the stone walls, also offers more modern-day comfort.
Each room features elegant furnishing, soft lighting and all the amenities you'd need – those that would thoroughly confuse a stone-age dweller (i.e. an ergonomic mattress, flat screen TV, hairdryer and underfloor heating).
And once you have settled in there are many activities allowing you to truly taste what the area has to offer, from treks and excursions to bread and cheese making lessons, to name a few.
- Stay in a historic luxury cave, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site
- Spend your vacation taking in the serenity of the southern Italian countryside
- Be a cave-dweller... in complete comfort.
