Is the Race to the Wreck to Hottest Race Around?

When someone says, “Let’s race to the wreck. Last one there’s a bag of bones!” you’d probably presume they were quoting a swashbuckling pirate from an overbudgeted Hollywood movie, starring a shipwreck of a lead actor. But you’d be wrong, me hearty! The Race to the Wreck is quite possibly the most incredible desert race you may not have heard of.

So.... With a ‘Yo-ho-ho,’ prepare to be astounded!

Mind the Bones, Matey.

Picture racing - on foot and fat-bike - through the ancient expanse of the Namib Naukluft Desert, slogging it out over the highest moving sand dunes in the world, towards the ocean's edge very aptly named the Skeleton Coast. The final destination of this 303km event through the sand is arguably the most famous wreck in the world, the unfortunate, yet now renowned Eduard Bohlen, which currently resides nearly 1km from the icy Atlantic waters. This landlocked wreck may be the goal, but your journey is one of non-stop splendour. You will race through the mighty Kuiseb River bed system, over the spectacular Namib dunes until you reach the eerie and beautiful Skeleton Coast.

The whalebones that are strewn everywhere are a mere hint at the reason for the area’s name. But, they’re not the only bones around; hundreds of lesser-known, old shipwrecks and their unfortunate inhabitants are dotted along the coast. Black-backed jackals, seals and oceanic birdlife will watch you from a safe distance as you trudge through the sand. This bucket list Rat Race you do not want to miss.

Namibia means ‘vast place’ and the name barely does justice to the extreme openness you will experience. So matey, its time to discard the rum and prepare to run!

In Short:

  • 303 km’s over 4.5 days through the desert
  • Fully catered event
  • Hot showers (most nights)
  • Extraction back to civilization via 4x4 or bush plane
