Why Taj Lake Palace?

Where in bustling Rajasthan can you live in blissful solitude, explore unhindered by the crowds, and be surrounded by some of India’s most impressive heritage architecture?

The answer to that riddle is the Taj Lake Palace Hotel, shimmering mirage-like on Lake Pichola in Udaipur.

If the name doesn’t ring any bells, perhaps you can picture the decadent palace from the James Bond movie Octopussy, the invite-only lair of the film’s eponymous Bond Girl played by Maud Adams? Yep, that was the Lake Palace Hotel and to this day they serve a mean martini at sunset.

To make things perfectly clear, the Taj Lake Palace Hotel hasn’t got anything to do with the Taj Mahal. It’s called the Lake Palace Hotel and it’s owned by the Taj hotel group. Just in case you were preparing for a Princess Di photo impression!

What Makes The Taj Lake Palace Hotel Special?

Did I mention that it sits, or rather, appears to levitate above glassy Lake Pichola, a world of Rajasthani luxury unto itself?

To access the hotel, you weave through Udaipur in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce, then at the lakes edge hop aboard a private boat bound for a welcome party fit for the royalty who once inhabited the island hotel.

The hotel’s location affords unrivalled views of the City Palace and the surrounding Aravalli and Machla Magra hills, which might not mean much right now but they’re the must-see sites in this neck of the woods and only guests at the Lake Palace can view them as a cinematic panorama atop a floating hotel carved from marble, while a lilting sitar fills the balmy air on tourist-less terraces. Alternatively, you could traipse around onshore and gaze longingly at the Lake Palace wondering what it might have been like to splash out and really experience the ‘Venice of the East’. Your choice!
